Oscars 2023: RRR and The Elephant Whisperers Create History

Indian cinema made history at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony when the blockbuster movie RRR was announced as the winner of the Oscar for Best Original Song for the track ‘Nattu Nattu’ and The Elephant Whisperers, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short category. This is the first time that an Indian production has won an Oscar making it an historic day for Indian cinema.

Oscar Worthy Performance

Deepika Padukone introduced the performance and remarked, “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made this song a global sensation. It plays during a pivotal scene in RRRa movie about the friendship between real-life Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. In addition to being sung in Telugu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonialist themes, it’s also a total banger.”

She added, “It’s earned millions of views on YouTube and Tik Tok. Has audiences dancing in movie theatres all around the world and is also the first song ever from Indian production to be nominated for an Oscar. Do you know Naatu? Because if you don’t you’re about to. From the film RRR this is Naatu Naatu.”

The fiery number, starring Alia Bhatt, Ram Charan and Jr NTR, composed by M M Keeravani, features the melodious voice of the renowned Indian singer Kaala Bhairava and is a tribute to the beauty of Indian folk music.

RRR, the big budget movie directed by the legendary Indian film director S. S. Rajamouli had been making waves since its release in 2022. From power packed performances by an ensemble cast to electrifying choreography, mesmerising action and upbeat music RRR had everything going its way to making a history.

S S Rajmouli who had already found success in big budget historic dramas such as Magadhera  Baahubali Part 1 and 2 joined with the charming Ram Charan, single take artist Jr NTR and the beautifully talented Alia Bhatt as his lead for his dream project RRR.

The remarkable cast and crew of RRR supported the director’s vision of creating a historic drama with an anti-colonial theme, leaving the audience awestruck at every turn and making cinematic history.

The Elephant Whisperers

Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s Netflix documentary short packed all the necessary emotion to evoke a sense of catharsis among the audience.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu, South India, this film is a poignant exploration of the deep connection between humans and animals. The documentary delves into the relationship between tribal communities in India and their natural environment, while also offering insights into Indian culture and the country’s enduring commitment to environmental conservation.

The beautiful Tamil language film takes us through the life of Bonna and Bellie and their unbreakable and undying bond with the orphaned baby elephant named Raghu. The short film is an emotional roller-coaster and a must watch for all those looking for an existential experience.
