Mukteshwar is said to have derived its name from the 350-year-old Mukteshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to local legend, Lord Shiva came to this place and granted a boon to a demon who was a devotee. It is believed that the demon became free from the cycle of birth and death and attained Mukti (salvation). That is how the place got its name.

The town also has a colonial past and was once a popular retreat for the British. The British developed the town as a hill station and built many bungalows and cottages, some still standing.
