Turkey Expels Ambassadors of 10 Countries

Turkey has ordered the expulsion of ambassadors of 10 countries, including the US, France, for interfering in domestic affairs. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has instructed his Foreign Ministry to fulfill this order.

These countries, including the US, have supported the release of social activist Usman Kavala. After which the President of Turkey has taken this action. President Erdogan gave this information in a speech in the city of Eskiehir in northwestern Turkey.

Erdogan said that with this action these countries will know and understand Turkey. However, there has been no statement from any country on this action of Turkey so far.

Usman Kavala has been in prison for four years, accused of funding nationwide protests in 2013. The Turkish government has also alleged that Osman Kavala was behind the failed 2016 coup, although he has always denied these allegations. Kavala was arrested in 2017.

In a joint statement on 18 October, the ambassadors of the US, France, Germany, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland and New Zealand called for Kavala’s release. These countries had pressured the government to take a quick decision on the Kavala case. After which the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassadors of all these countries and called their statement irresponsible. Four days later, that is, on Saturday, he was issued an instruction to leave Turkey.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has declared the ambassadors of these countries as Persona non grata. This means that the ambassador has now become an unwanted for Turkey. These ambassadors will have to leave the Turkish border within 48 to 72 hours.

Usually, no country expels the ambassador but other diplomats. This action of Turkey may go against international rules. In such a situation, more strict restrictions may be imposed on Turkey, which is already facing strict US sanctions. Other Western countries, including France, can impose these restrictions on Turkey.
