LG gets more rights in Delhi, GNCTD Amendment Bill passed in Lok Sabha

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday. It was introduced by the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy. Kejriwal government of Delhi is opposing this bill. This bill increases the rights of the Lieutenant Governor over the elected government. The bill provides that the Delhi government will be required to take LG’s opinion before taking any decision. The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party opposed the bill in the Lok Sabha, calling it unconstitutional. At the same time, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kishan Reddy said that it has become necessary to bring this bill, because there has been ambiguity on some issues in the functioning of the Delhi government. Many cases were also filed in the courts. He said that it should not be called a political bill. It is being brought in to eliminate ambiguity in some issues, as Delhi is a union territory. This will clear up some confusion and improve the way the administration functions. After the bill was passed, Arvind Kejriwal expressed his displeasure on social media. He said that the passing of the GNCTD Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha is an insult to the people of Delhi. The Bill snatches rights from those whom the people have voted for and empowers those who were defeated to run Delhi. BJP has cheated people.
