International Coffee Day

Have a date or a plan to propose someone. Coffee is considered a great drink to make instant feel good. Espresso, Café Moca, Irish, Cappuccino, Café Latte, Americano, Turkish, McKay-Auto, White Coffee, Indian Filter Coffee are some of the popular names. In this way, you will also have some tales to tell on coffee, but today we are going to tell you about the variety of coffee, which is made from civet cat potty and is the most expensive coffee in the world.

The coffee craze started from Indonesia, then known as the East Indies. When Dutch merchants arrived in Indonesia, they started a plantation by importing coffee beans from Yemen. Talking about Kopi Luwak, it started in the 19th century, when Dutch people prevented local workers from cultivating coffee in Indonesia, then those workers collected coffee beans from the civet cat’s pot, dried it after cleaning it. Completed the process and started using it as coffee. The taste of these coffee beans is tastier than other coffee beans. Since then the discussions of Kopi Luwak Coffee started.

Where is this coffee made in India?

Narendra Hebbar, the founder of Coorg Consolidated Commodities, told in a special conversation with Bhaskar Woman that the processing of Kopi Luwak in India is done only in Coorg in India. I started this work in the year 2015. The natural environment of Coorg is such that civet cats are found here, so I started the work of Kopi Luwak Coffee here. Since this coffee is sold very expensive, civet cats are kept in captivity in many places around the world. They are given raw coffee beans to eat, so that people can get the most expensive coffee in the world, but we don’t do that.

How is this coffee made?

Since the civet cat lives here and coffee is also grown here, it is our job to go through all the process of such beans which this cat eats and then puts them out through the potty. He said that we have set up only Kopi Luwak Coffee Processing Plant, where these coffee beans are cleaned, dried, hulled (removal of the upper skin of the beans) and polishing. Regarding the beginning of this work, he said that this work was very risky. People have a mentality that they will spend a lot on unnecessary things, but will refrain from buying coffee worth thousands of rupees.

This coffee takes three days to prepare. Once a civet cat eats it and goes potty, it is left in the same place for two days. In this time it dries naturally and on the third day it is washed and dried, the layer on it is removed, the beans are polished. After passing through several stages, the raw coffee beans are ready to become roasted coffee. He told that this coffee has a positive effect on our eyes and skin. The anti-oxidants present in it prove to be beneficial for the body, many research is being done on it, so that its benefits can be known.

Why is this the world’s most expensive coffee?

Talking about the cost of this coffee, Hebber said that the cost of these coffee beans in India is Rs.9000 per kg. At the same time, the cost of a cup of this coffee is Rs 450. Talking about the Gulf Countries, a cup of this coffee is available up to Rs 3000. At the same time, in foreign countries it is available at 25 to 30 thousand rupees per kg. The reason for its high cost is its processing. He told that in 2 years, one and a half tons of raw processed a lot, which remained only 600 kg till roasted beans were made. That is, only 40% of the total production of this coffee is left for sale.

You may be surprised to know that before this unit was installed in Coorg, people used to hunt and eat civet cats. Because people liked the taste of it and thought that the cat was ruining their coffee fields. However, after the installation of this processing unit and the hard work of the government, awareness has come among the people that this cat is not harming them, but is doing good. That’s why now there is a strict law related to killing animals and people have started understanding the importance of civet.
