Story behind The puja

To save villagers, lord Krishna made a plan. He lifted Goverdhan hill in his finger and requested all villagers to take shelter under the hill. In this way, Goverdhan Giri and Lord Krishna saved the life of a number of people.

From that time, Goverdhan puja takes place every year on the first day of the Vikram sambhrant calendar. This is the festival to show tribute to Lord Krishna and Govardhan hill. Both Lord and hill have helped people to survive from the natural disaster. The puja also takes place every year to worship hills and lords so that people can save their life from the natural disaster.

Significance of the puja
Goverdhan puja is not just a ritual; it contains a number of significance also. The main significance of the puja is it is the tribute giving ceremony to the lord Krishna, Mountains, and much more. In this puja, people worship mountains so that they can give shelter to the people when they need help in natural disasters.

At the time of Goverdhan puja, people worship their cows and bulls also. They at first, bath their cows and bulls and make them colorful using colors. They also use flowers and garlands to decorate their look. On the New Year day of Gujarati people, the puja takes place. The day is also denoted as the Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Kartik month.
