FIFA 2022: The Saga of Defending Champions

France beat Morocco 2-0 in the FIFA 2022 semi-finals and became the 3rd defending champion to have ever reached the Football World Cup finals. 2002 was the last time a defending champion reached the FIFA World Cup finals where Brazil the 1998 defending champion lost to France.

Only Italy (1934 & 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) have won successive Football World championship titles.

With five goals each, Messi and Kylian Mbappé of France are in the race for the Golden Boot award given to the leading goal scorer in the World Cup.

With two world cup victories on each side, France and Argentina prepare for their tryst with destiny on December 18. While France gears up to repeat its 2018 feat and successfully defend the world cup, Argentina will focus on giving its all, especially as it will be Lionel Messi’s last World Cup match.
Messi has announced his international retirement and said that the Sunday (December 18) match would be the last game for his country. “I feel very happy to be able to achieve this, to finish my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final,” Messi told Argentine media outlet Diario Deportivo Ole.
“It’s many years for the next one and I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. And to finish like this, it’s the best,” added Messi.

The Argentina captain is the top goal scorer at World Cups for Argentina. He has surpassed Gabriel Batistuta as the top Argentine scorer with 11 goals.

The 35-year-old Messi is playing at his fifth World Cup, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano.
