Bangkok’s Electric Boat Taxis Set Sail This July

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is set to revolutionize urban transportation with the launch of an on-demand electric boat taxi service in July. This innovative service, developed by Krung Thep Thanakom Co (KT), aims to reduce traffic congestion and boost tourism, offering a unique way to explore the city.

An Exciting Integration

The electric boat taxis will be integrated with Bangkok’s existing electric train, bus, and motorcycle taxi networks, creating a seamless and exciting transportation experience for both locals and tourists. This eco-friendly initiative will initially operate in Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and its tributaries, such as Khlong Bang Lamphu, with plans to expand to other iconic canals like Khlong Lat Phrao.

Innovative and Eco-Friendly

Tharatporn Techakitkachorn, KT’s managing director, announced that the trial phase would begin next month. Passengers can book the boats through a dedicated app, with fares calculated based on distance. The service will start with two prototype boats, each with a capacity of 6-10 seats, and plans to expand the fleet after the pilot phase.

Enhancing Urban Mobility

In addition to the boat taxi service, the BMA is preparing an app for motorcycle taxis that will connect 5,000 taxis and 90,000 licensed drivers, ensuring fair and transparent fares for passengers. This initiative is part of the BMA’s broader efforts to modernize and enhance the city’s transportation infrastructure.

A Nod to Bangkok’s History

Bangkok’s khlongs were once the city’s main thoroughfares, with boats serving as the primary mode of transportation. While roads have now taken precedence, the city’s canals remain vital for daily commuting. The introduction of electric boat taxis harks back to this historical mode of travel, now updated with modern technology and eco-friendly practices.

What to Expect

  • Launch Date: July
  • Initial Routes: Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and Khlong Bang Lamphu
  • Booking Method: App-based, with fares determined by distance
  • Expansion Plans: To include more canals across the city after the pilot phase

This initiative marks a significant step towards reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable transportation in Bangkok. Stay tuned for more updates as the launch date approaches!
