Anti-covid 2-DG drug gets DGCI approval

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has given emergency approval to the treatment of Corona with the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) against the ongoing fight with Corona. This will be an alternative treatment for a corona infected patient. RT-PCR reports of patients on which the drug was used also came out negative.

This drug helps the corona patients recover faster by stopping the growth of the infection. The 2-DG drug has been formulated by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) Lab Institute of Nuclear Medicine with the help of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory. In the initial trial, it has been found that this also improves the oxygen level of the patient.

The drug is available in powder form. The patient has to be fed by dissolving it in water. This drug reaches the cells directly where infection occurs and stops the virus from growing. DRDO has issued a statement saying that it can be easily produced in large quantities.
